So Much Happened Before Dorothy Dropped In

Wicked Announced for 2020

Hot off the heals of New Plymouth Operatic highly attended 2019 production of Priscilla – Queen of the Desert – The Musical, which closed last weekend at the TSB Showplace, the Society moves straight into preparations for its next major production, Wicked, which will play at New Plymouth's TSB Showplace in June 2020.

Wicked tells the back-story of “The Wizard of Oz” (a ‘Prequel’ – think Star Wars).  The show tells the story from before and continues after Dorothy Gale arrives in Oz, and includes many references to the 1939 Judy Garland film and Baum's novel. The story centres around the unlikely friendship between two witches – one popular and one wicked! Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

With a score written by Grammy, Tony and Academy Award-winning composer Stephen Schwartz, this family-friendly musical is the definition of ‘Broadway Spectacular’.  Wicked has been running continuously on Broadway (New York) since the show opened on 30 October 2003, notching up 6,552 performances so far, and still plays to full houses on Broadway 8 shows per week. Wicked is the second highest grossing musical in Broadway history (behind only The Lion King, and surpassing The Phantom of the Opera).

Wicked’s broad appeal to the general public is thanks its mix of nostalgia for audiences back through to one of the most loved and known films of all time, combined with a girl-power message and a visual spectacle only mega-musical can deliver.

Wicked looks set to continue on New Plymouth's growing reputation as the theatre capital of the North Island.  Approximately 15% of the attendees to New Plymouth Operatic's productions each year now are travelling from out of Taranaki to see the show.  “When we do our show planning, we look to provide a range of shows over a range of years for a range of people – both in terms of casting and audience appeal” said New Plymouth Operatic’s Mark Leuthard.  “Wicked certainly is a different sort of show to Priscilla, and both are different again to Les Miserables which we staged in 2018”.

New Plymouth Operatic’s preparations for Wicked now start to ramp up, with Priscilla now closed, and the set, props and costumes for Wicked due to arrive in New Plymouth in just over 12 weeks time, while both Wicked auditions and tickets on sale are expected prior to Christmas this year as well.

New Plymouth Operatic has today announced that an additional performance has been added to the upcoming season of Priscilla – Queen of the Desert, taking the number of performances in the season to 17.

The new performance will be staged on Tuesday 25th June at 7.30pm.

“We have been really happy with how Priscilla ticket sales have been going, and how the people of Taranaki have embraced Priscilla” says New Plymouth Operatic Sales and Marketing Manager Patrick Landrigan.  “Priscilla attendances are tracking in line with those from our 2014 production of The Phantom of the Opera – which is far exceeding our expectations” said Mr Landrigan.  The gallery (top level) of the TSB Theatre has already been released and has been selling through for all performances.

Preparations for the show have been going very well, according to production manager Steve Lloyd.  The show is now all packed into the TSB Theatre, and the cast and crew are in full technical rehearsals.  “Adding a show is not a decision we take lightly” added Mr Lloyd.  We have to balance so many factors, from the audience demand, to the needs of fabulous 250+ volunteer cast and our crew” says Lloyd “We are confident the addition of one further performance at this time achieves this balance”.

A Divalicious Musical Comedy, Priscilla Queen of the Desert is an uplifting story, based on the 1994 Oscar-winning hit movie, of three Sydney drag artists who hop aboard a battered old bus named Priscilla, on a journey of self-discovery which takes them on a road trip to the heartland of Australia searching for love, friendship and family.

The now 17 performance long season of Priscilla runs for the same number of performances as New Plymouth Operatic’s 2018 production of Les Miserables, however for Les Miserables those performances played over 4 weekends, whereas Priscilla plays over 3.  “Planning these big shows is a big job and done well in advance of tickets going on sale” says Mr Landrigan.  The choice of whether we run a season over 3 weekends or 4 weekends is not about how many performances we stage, but whether these are condensed into 3 weekends or a bit more spread out over 4 weekends” says Mr Landrigan.

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – The Musical is set to run at New Plymouth’s TSB Showplace from Thursday 20 June – Saturday 6 July and the season CANNOT be extended past the 6th. Make sure you don't Miss the Bus!

Tickets for all performances including the newly released performance are now  available from Ticketek and the TSB Showplace
